Eye Movement Desensitization

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing incorporates the use of eye movements or other bilateral stimulation to reduce symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder and heal from traumatic life events. During the eight stage process of EMDR, therapist and client work to decrease the distress level of an identified traumatic event. Through stimulating both sides of the brain, EMDR is thought to allow the brain to naturally heal unresolved traumatic memories and to reprocess these memories, thus reducing distressing symptoms. EMDR therapy is primarily used to address PTSD and can be implemented with children, adolescents, or adults.
